Time To Focus On You

So we're now officially in H2.

Last week we talked about how to get a great result in your half year appraisal. So putting business to one side - what were your personal goals for 2017?

Did you set new years resolutions? Or have ideas about what you wanted to achieve this year?

Perhaps you want to be fitter, plan an amazing wedding, save for an epic holiday, set up your own business.

Let's check in - how do you feel about your progress towards these so far?

Have you lost a stone? Booked the venue, photographer, band? Booked flights to New York? Created your business website?

We tend to be focussed on work-related goals. They're often clear-cut, we're accountable to our bosses and we're aware we'll be sacked if we don't deliver. Our personal goals can fall by the wayside.

So how can we bring greater visibility and accountability to our personal goals.

Firstly, why bother with more goals, outside our business lives?

Personal goals...
...remind us that there is more to life than work
...give us a greater sense of purpose & meaning in our lives
...give us something to get passionate about and bring a great sense of achievement

In business, we're more likely to see well articulated, smart goals with a corresponding plan and results tracking to check effectiveness (best case scenario!).

For personal goals, I generally just hear 'I'd like to be fitter', with some vague comments around joining a gym and signing up to a free diet challenge on Facebook.

Why is that the case? Why do we prioritise employee goals over personal goals?

This week lets do a 180. You've done the business focus - think about you and what you want in H2.

Here's some questions for you to consider:

  • Do you have a hobby you could be great at with more practise?
  • Is there something new you've been wanting to try but haven't gotten around to?
  • Are you feeling bad about ditching an idea/ resolution you had at the start of the year?

Spend some time thinking about your personal life this week.

Pick a goal that you care about and
1) decide on the best next step - what 1 thing can you do this week to get a step closer to your goal
2) create a plan - have the same rigour as you would in corporate
3) find an accountability partner - a coach, a friend, a colleague

I'd love to hear about the commitments you make on your personal goals this week.

My personal goals for July are to improve my fitness by completing 3 workouts a week and to relax on a 1 week holiday to unwind and re-focus for H2. I'll let you know how I get on !

Hit reply and let me know what you're working on. I'm happy to be your accountability partner.

Wishing you all the best

P.S. If you've been super focussed on work-related goals recently, this week I'm encouraging you to take a step back and make time for your personal goals. Give them attention this week - what is 1 action you can take to enhance your focus and revitalise that goal?
