The role of the heart and mind in the corporate world
Last week I was hit with some truth bombs about company culture at the Women in Business expo.
Inspiring before she even started talking, baroness and business icon Karren Brady was such a highlight - she’s also personable and encouraging and (most importantly!) wants to pay it forward. I walked away with loads of ideas.
Context - Karren managed to create unity across a football club, where the disparity of earnings for an 18 year old man could be 20k per week or 20k per annum. She had to create understanding and team work across people with radically different lives. So how did she do it?.
“Really good culture comes from really good leadership”. And that’s about both hearts and minds.
*Hearts* make people feel valued, create an environment where people share ideas, help them fulfil their personal ambition.
*Minds* have a company vision that provides clarity and unity, explain to people their role in achieving that vision, reward them.
Everyone is responsible for making the company better. Encourage people to be curious about other parts of the business.
Reflect on your company or team culture. In which of these areas could you take more action?
