Ed Sheeran and getting what you want in 2018
Firstly, happy new year! I hope 2018 is your best year yet.
I expect by now you’ve come up with some things you’d like to achieve in 2018. The most common changes people want to make in January are work or health & fitness related. I bet that doesn’t surprise you.
When we’ve had a break from day to day working life (Christmas is a huge distraction and the bank holidays mean less time at work), we consciously and unconsciously reflect on our lives. It gives us a different perspective.
So what do you want in 2018?
You know the answer already - you just might struggle to access it. When you were a child and were asked what you wanted to be, you shared your ideas without restraint.
As we get older our imagination becomes inhibited. We restrict it with worries about what other people might think if we confess we want to be a florist, or with limiting beliefs that such careers aren't financially viable or 'realistic'.
If you want a new job this year, even if it's not right now, the next right action is to start thinking about what that job could be.
Get some ideas flowing - there are always multiple options.
I heard Graham Norton interviewing Ed Sheeran last week. Ed was asked for songwriting advice and how he comes up with his lyrics. His response was that everyone has good songs and bad songs in them. You need to get all the bad ones out to unclog and get at the good ones.
Struck me that this works in a job scenario too. If you’re unsure what job you want, the best way to start working it out is to get ALL your ideas written down. Ignore whether your initial reaction is they are good or bad ideas. If they’re clogging your mind they’re blocking you from making progress and refining the list.
I suggest you spend the first week of January creating this list of ideas. Don't filter yourself, we can do that later - anything is possible for you.
Next week I’ll talk about what to do with your best ideas.
