Please stop saying you’re not strategic . . .

This is something I regularly hear - this week it was from two experienced women leaders with a track record of delivery.

People are told in feedback they are ‘not strategic enough,’ when the definition of strategic is simply: “the identification of long-term or overall aims and interests and the means of achieving them.”

- You already do this every day.

A basic example is you have a strategy for getting to the office, deciding which is the optimal train carriage to get the best seat, you’ve downloaded a podcast in anticipation of the no 3G blackspot on your train journey.

All this is strategy - goal, idea & plan.

So let’s reframe ‘I’m not strategic’ to what the real challenge is, because this thought is holding you back.

It’s actually probably something more specific that’s bothering you, for example you might want to:

- Get clear on the macro trends for your sector

- Better understand the goals of your firm or observe your peers approach

- Get an external lens on your strategy/ research the competition

- Get comfortable with a P&L/ financials Etc.

etc…

So instead of saying you’re not strategic, be more specific and then take action to close the gap.
