When you don't know your next move...

Sometimes our next step, or our next decision, can feel so monumental… that we don't take it. Usually because we’re obsessed with making sure that next step is perfect.

One area where I often see this is in relation to our careers, particularly if someone is considering a significant change. Rather than just make 'any' career move, we can be so determined to make the right one, that we end up stalling. We say we'll give it some more thought. We'll weigh up the options - 1. staying at the firm, looking for a different role or a promotion or 2. leaving and seeing if the grass is greener.

Trying to decide where to even start in this process is enough to create inaction, a 'freeze' moment.

The more time I've spent seeking my purpose and the more time I've spent working with clients who are seeking theirs, the more I realise how difficult it is to find just one perfect next step.

Here are some points I've observed along these journeys that have helped people create a feeling of progress and success:
- exploring multiple ideas that we're passionate about rather than it needing to be 'one thing' for the rest of our lives (release the pressure!)
- following our curiosity - letting that intrigue direct us towards our next step
- taking one fun step after another and enjoying the journey vs. only allowing ourselves enjoyment when we achieve a faraway goal (or never because we pick another goal and keep striving)
becoming great at something - mastering a skill
- forming new or better relationships with like minded people who celebrate our successes with us.

If we're in motion, exploring our interests, learning, being open minded about where next steps can take us, it is MUCH more likely that our purpose will find us. So keep an eye out for clues to your purpose, but don't let it stall you. Stay in motion and it becomes clearer and you'll have a lot more fun along the way.

KEEP-GOING

Try this perspective shift and help the people you mentor do the same, I hope it helps you to work towards your purpose with less pressure.

P.S.  Wanting to find our purpose is a motivating, positive driver...until it isn't. It can become frustrating, it can stop us progressing anything for fear that next step isn't quite right. We learn more through action so soften your focus.

P.P.S.  There's 2 ways you can currently work with me: 1) a 2 hour breakthrough NLP session or 2) a 4 session coaching programme over 2 months. All phone based. When you're ready, hit reply and we'll agree which approach best serves your goal.
