Ever feel like you're not making progress quickly enough?
Following on from last weeks theme of slowing down, I wanted to follow up and remind you to enjoy your journey.
If you're anything like me, you've probably got a goal that you're working towards, and you're probablyimpatient about getting there.
It's easy to get frustrated and caught up in the desire to have it done NOW.
This impatience has a good side - if you call it drive, determination and commitment.
But it also has a down side - the distracting feeling of needing to make progress and hit your goals faster means you skip over some great experiences along the way.
You'll likely have some false starts on the way to meeting your goal - maybe you didn't speak up in that meeting, or didn't quite nail the brief on a client presentation, or your boss spotted you missed out a key point in a board paper.
But you need to remember to celebrate the small wins along the way. Reflecting on the above, you should celebrate that you managed to get an invite to the key meeting, that you were given the responsibility to write the client pitch, that you got the opportunity to learn something from your boss.
These are great experiences - by putting yourself out there and taking action towards your goal you're getting closer to it.
How to weave celebrations into your day:
- NOTICE them! Our brains are wired to spend more time in negativity, worrying about threats (translate threats in the wild to bad outcomes in the office - our brains struggle to differentiate) so you'll need to work at it to notice the good moments
- When you spot one (e.g. you helped one of your team understand something new) take a moment to embrace it, before dashing off to your next meeting
- at the end of your day - think of 3 moments that you're grateful for. What 3 things happened today that made you feel good? Write them down and go to sleep with that feeling of happiness and progress.
So alongside our August theme of slowing down and reflecting - let yourself celebrate where you are today. I'm proud of you - be proud of yourself.
P.S. Celebrate now! Put a decent bottle of wine in the fridge and give yourself a pat on the back :)
