Taking Control

Today I want to talk about Cause & Effect.

Because when you're 'at Cause', you are in control.

Let me explain. We all know what is meant by Cause & Effect, right? Where an action or event (cause) leads to a specific result (effect).

This is an important life principle and therefore an important career principle.

When we're struggling with our roles, or feeling trapped, or uncertain what next step to take, we can fall into the 'Effect' stage. Perhaps your inner monologue is saying 'poor me', 'I'm never the one who gets the promotion', 'other people are better at presenting that me', 'why didn't I get recognition for that piece of work'.... etc etc.

You'll also have observed examples of this in business meetings e.g. You didn't give me enough time, you weren't clear in your instructions, the other people involved delivered late etc.

You get the idea. Being at the 'Effect' stage means things are happening to you. It feels out of control. It's everyone else's fault. Why can't the world fix itself so you can have an easier life.

Getting stuck in these 'Effect' thought patterns, will keep you feeling unresourceful.

You want to get into a 'Cause' headspace and take personal responsibility. E.g. what can I do to improve this situation, how can I fix this, what can I do to advance my career. What can 'I' do.

Being at 'Cause' is a powerful place to be. There's always an action you could be taking to make progress if you're willing to make yourself accountable and get it done.

From a career perspective, you need to remember that you're self-employed. No employer will manage your career for you. Whilst a couple of bosses may recommend roles or put you forward for promotions, at some point you'll have another boss who may not.

It's about taking radical responsibility for managing your own career.

So the call to action this week is to consider whether you've lapsed into 'Effect' thinking, put yourself back at 'Cause' and create 3 actions that you can progress in July to advance your next career steps. I'd love to hear the actions you create, hit reply and let me know.
